New Political Character
The history of political participation of women in the Czech Republic
We want equal educational, political and civil liberties.
The main requirements of the first waves of feminism were constitute basic political, civil and birth rights in law. It acted mainly about suffrage and about equal acces to the education (the first girl's grammar school in the central Europe, Minerva, was founded in Prague in the year 1890 by merit of Eliška Krásnohorská) (…) In the first half 20th century was got the suffrage for women in most of European countries (New Zealand 1893, Czechoslovakia 1920), but is alarming that in some states came to it not until in the second half 20thcentury (Switzerland 1971, Jordan 1982) (feminismus, online).
In the Czech Republic it struggles a group of politic and civil law of women. Some eminent personalities who was also connect up in international nets (M. D. Rettigová, B. Němcová, K. Světlá, S. Podlipská and E. Krásnohorská) wanted at first edify their full members, support a charity and new ideas, introduce a machines in households and také care about children and teen-agers. The important influence had so called American club of Ladies(americký klub dám) in this period. This club established Karolina Světlá and Vojtěch Náprstek. The personage is also T. G. Masaryk who was ipressed with ideas his wife Charlotta G. Masaryk and with feministic thinker J. S.Mill.
The political cultural life centred on Womanly czech club(Ženský klub český) which was found in the year 1903. The significant person was F. Plamínková who established Womanly national council (Ženská národní rada) later. This council had to supervise upon observance of egality in practise In the constitution from 1920 was situated that "the women are political, social and cultural straight to men" (feminismus, online). It existed also the women house. It stood on the address Ve Smečkách 26/594. There lived, read the women and damsels. There was also the restaurant for women. In the World War Two was shut this house. Past World War Two was open again but past the year 1948 was ended his activities definitely and the many of club-women was arrested, among others also Milada Horáková who was executed of her activity.
The second period of feminism
The one way how to heighten a number of women in politics is introduction of system of guotas. This is not a new idea. For a year 1989 were established quotas which catered to a representation of women in politics in the 30 percent. This quotas arose after of model of Soviet Union and were included in the law. (…) But never put to the whole impletion. In the Soviet Union was a quote for federal council and state duma 33%. (…) In the Czechoslovakia was regarded a emphasis mainly on the representation of interests workwoman and peasant woman. In this view the communistic acces which centred on presentation of woman like a mother and workwoman, stayed rooted in majority of men and women. In the same time it got to the double usage for 2 quotas - the women were representative like a lady and contemporary like representative of working class. Past the year 1989 were umade tis formal rules and very declined number of women in politics. (Rakušanová, online).
A communism barred any advances for feministic discursion, in spite of it developed of sure endeavour to promote the women for example in the political function. (genderfactor, online).
But the feministic groups come again in front past World War Two in 60thyears 20th century. The feminism was linked with the fight for human rights and with a student group in this time. Lots of women took part in political activities, but they often investigated with that also here her male colleagues keep them in traditional subordinate position. The women fel also that they can finish studies almost any school but after that they can not expertly assert. Consequently the women began to found their independent organisation which solved mainly the feministic questions. The feministic group in the second period solved wider spectrum of problems and divided constricted. The group bears also some new topic and new approaches. In the forefront come for example a problem of socialization, language and a position of women in the various areas of social life. A significant asset is motive personal is political which bears some new possibilities of sight for example on housework and position of woman in household in wider context. (feminismus, online). The communistic propagandism inerpreted the feministic group in 60thyears 20thcentury as capitalistic subjection of women (genderfactor, online).
In conclusion I mention very shortly the history of Gender Studies.
Gender Studies arose in the Czech Republic in November in the year 1991. It was in the house of sociologist Jiřina Šiklová and Gender Studies arose as special library, so called Curriculum centreand the contact centre of czech woman organisation. (…) In the flat of J. Šiklová came to cumulate the books and came to accrue from a unique collection of feministic literature, in the beginning mainly from gifts American. The flat of J. Šiklová became a contact place for few years. There was organizered lectures, discussion and later also language courses. It attended here to the various meeting with foreign feminist who was attended the Prague in this time. (…) In between years 1993 - 1996 the library expanded. It was mainly thank lots of foreign gifts but gradually it started with systematic acquisition of books. Already on the beginning had the library more of books than Karlova University. Today this library have 20 employee and is accesible for general public. (genderstudies, online)
